Best Restaurants in Chicago for Every Budget – A Foodie’s Guide

If there’s one thing I love about Chicago, it’s the food scene. No matter what your budget is, this city has something incredible to offer—from legendary deep-dish pizza to fine dining that’s worth every penny. As someone who’s eaten my way through the Windy City, I’ve rounded up my favorite spots for every price range.

Budget-Friendly Bites ($)

When I want something delicious without breaking the bank, I head straight to Portillo’s. Their Chicago-style hot dog is a must-try—poppy seed bun, mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, a pickle spear, and a dash of celery salt. It’s messy, but that’s part of the fun. And if you’re in the mood for something heartier, their Italian beef sandwich dipped in au jus is unreal.

For pizza lovers, Pequod’s in Lincoln Park is the move. Their caramelized crust makes their deep-dish stand out from the rest, and a small pizza can easily feed two people, making it a steal. I remember the first time I took a bite—I had to sit back and just appreciate the moment.

Mid-Range Magic ($$)

When I have a little extra to spend but don’t want to go overboard, I always find myself at Girl & the Goat. Stephanie Izard’s globally inspired menu is packed with bold flavors—I still think about the wood-fired oysters and goat empanadas I had there last time. Plus, the atmosphere is lively without feeling too fancy, which makes it a great spot for a casual but memorable night out.

Another go-to is The Purple Pig, right off Michigan Avenue. Their Mediterranean-style small plates are perfect for sharing, and their house-cured meats and cheeses are some of the best in the city. One time, I ordered the bone marrow with herb salad, and I swear I almost licked the plate.

Splurge-Worthy Spots ($$$$)

When I’m celebrating something special or just feel like treating myself, Chicago’s fine dining scene never disappoints. Alinea is hands-down one of the most unique dining experiences I’ve ever had. Every dish is like a work of art—one course even arrived in a balloon filled with edible helium. It’s pricey, but if you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, this is it.

For a more classic (but still upscale) experience, Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse is my pick. Their steaks are legendary, and the old-school Chicago vibe makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The first time I ate there, I went for their signature W.R. Chicago Cut, and it was honestly one of the best steaks of my life.
